Yay, I finished it! Last December, I picked up X-Ray, The Unauthorized Autobiography of Ray Davies, leader of The Kinks. I've been reading it all year, and finally finished it.

I'm a big fan of the Kinks, so it was cool to hear stories of the early days (the book only goes through the early seventies).

When I was all into the music from the 60s and 70s, I read somewhere that Davies' name is pronounced "Davis", but he never publicly corrected it and everyone says "Day-vees." Recently, I heard him actually say that in a radio interview. Well, "recently"! Whenever his latest album was released.

Stuff like that bugs me. If someone mispronounced my name, I'd correct 'em til they got it right.

That kind of thing usually bugs me. This one not so much. Maybe because I've always known him as Day-veez. But also...

UK English is so abbreviated. So many names are pronounced much shortened from their spellings. You know, like how Leicester is pronounced Lester. This seems like that. What I'm getting at, is that maybe Day-vis and Day-veez are so similar, even in Ray's own mind, that he doesn't bother making a distinction. In fact, when I've heard him speak, I've never been certain just how he pronounced it. It sounded like Day-vees (S not Z), kind of in between.

If you have another year to spend reading a rock biography, I highly recommend Keith Richards' Life. Although, if you're like me, you won't willingly put it down often. It reads like a novel.
