On the way down to Jacob Lake from Page, I ran into some snow. Coincidentally, it was the furthest south I'd been.

The next morning, on May 18th, the cabins looked like this.

After that, I went up to Coyote Buttes, before coming back down through Jacob Lake, through the Kaibab National Forest, to the Grand Canyon.

It was snowing, at high elevation. There had been some bad fires, several years before, and the skeletons of most of the trees were still standing.

As I got closer to the park, the snow quit falling, but evidence of it, and of the previous day's snow (six inches to a foot) was still on the ground.

As you reach the Grand Canyon Lodge, you can't really see the canyon. You park, and walk over to the lodge. You go into the massive lobby, with its huge Navajo rugs hanging, the check-in desk and the big restaurant. Just past the desk, there are some stairs that lead down to a sitting area with a fireplace. From the top of these stairs is your first view of the canyon, through the windows.

These are the cabins available for rent. They don't look very pleasant, but they certainly have location going for them, being right next to the Lodge.

From Point Imperial. That's the Vermillion Cliffs in the distance. That's the same area I drove through, after taking this other picture.

As you can see, the weather was... mixed. Cold, windy, rainy, cloudy, with some sun.

As I left the park and headed back up the Kaibab plateau, the snow closed in again. It was fairly heavy this time, causing some slick roads.

Funny, it was overcast most of the time, then the sun started peeking through, then when I left the rim, it started snowing again.

the best shots were when it was partly clouded with that warm light just on bits of the canyon. it's not possible to really get it with bright light.

It was certainly *interesting* light! :-)

Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rim has similar cabins for rent and I guess they're pretty ok on the inside. They're right by the rim but I wouldn't stay there because there is too much foot traffic going past your windows. The whole village of hotels and businesses is way too crowded for my taste on the South Rim. Yavapai Lodge is the way to go.

Your views look like mine but in an opposite sort of way.
;)
Very pretty light for your canyon views!

I thin I'd like seeing the Canyon in the dead of winter someday...with lots of snow.

with snow

Yes, that would be great... for photography.

Beautiful scenery minus the snow of course! LOL

Well, the snow was pretty too. I just wasn't thrilled about the cold!

Just my opinion of course growing up all these years in the Midwest but I like my snow in pictures. LOL

wow, kevin, these are excellent pictures. And I love the little snow people in the 11th picture.

It's a place I've always wanted to visit. I'm sure there are all kinds of romantic stories about the cabins, too. Ghosties and stuff.

I know the lodge burned at least once. I'm not sure if the cabins are original.
