Date: 2011-08-14 03:20 pm (UTC)From:Isn't is amzing you can go back 1500 years, considering all the records that didn't survive the Dark Ages? My wife did the geneology on my Dad's Dad's family, and we trace back to the Spencers, circa 1300s. So, I can say that I'm Lady Diana Spencer's distant cousin.

Date: 2011-08-14 03:41 pm (UTC)From:One side of my stepmom's family was traced back to 945 or something like that. It is pretty amzing, considering that even in this country, you sometimes can't find records from the 1800's. Also, in Europe, you run into the problem where you can't trace by family name because they didn't take their father's surname.

Date: 2011-08-15 02:49 pm (UTC)From:If my number of ancestors doubles with every generation (two parents, four grandparents, etc.) and we assume 25 years per generation, then my number of ancestors becomes larger than the British population some time in the 15th century. So I'm probably descended from just about everyone who was alive before then.
So I'm descended from royalty too, and you and I are distant cousins!
Here's a nice animated thing about UK population: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/interactive/animations/population/index_embed.shtml

Date: 2011-08-15 05:28 pm (UTC)From:Yeah, I would assume that everyone in Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, three quarters the population of the US, and ninety percent of Canada has the same relation. It's fun for us Americans to joke about, because it's so hard to trace lineage back that far.
Question: How likely is it for a French person to have similar ancestors, that far back?

Date: 2011-08-15 10:03 pm (UTC)From:Your genealogist did pretty well to get back so far. I've seen one branch of my family traced back to the 1600s but only because they lived in the same village up until the 20th century.

Date: 2011-08-15 10:49 pm (UTC)From:I'd like to see my stepmom's work. They work on the royal families has all been done, but I wonder how many generations she went through to get that far.

Date: 2011-08-16 10:06 am (UTC)From:Seems likely. If you're related to any royalty, you're related to all of them.

Date: 2011-08-15 10:40 pm (UTC)From:My sister did a similar search years ago, announcing our supposed royal blood, so I asked her how many horse thieves she also uncovered... and was met with silence. But I'm also sure my sister's search was not as thorough or as well documented as your stepmom's. My sister tends to the "silly."
