I just found that you can filter which of your friends' entries appear on your friends page, by their tags. Go to http://www.livejournal.com/friends/edit.bml and click on "select tags" by a person's username. Then click on "modify entries feed".

I won't do this, since I don't care to filter out any of my friends' posts. I skim each one, at least, to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I saw that a long time ago, but I never use it.

I thought it was more an interesting thing than a useful thing.

I can't imagine wanting to do that, but that's good to know.

Wait a minute - I just thought of an instance where that might be a good idea! :-)

There's the person I know with all these "MDA" tags...

That flashed through my mind. :-)

If I didn't want my friends' posts to appear on my friends page, they wouldn't be my friends. I suppose it's a good feature to have if you have friends that don't respect the NSFW theme (like posting pictures of Lady Gaga half-clothed in cuts of beef).

That's a good point, but it assumes those friends would always tag properly.

I have a filter for communities, which includes some NSFW ones, like [livejournal.com profile] photographie.

At one point I divided my communities and friends into separate things, so my friends page is actually /friends/friends (instead of the normal /friends) and then I have /friends/music for music communities (which I must have deleted all of, it's gone now) because I had way too much stuff to watch all on one day, so I just watched real people instead of communities as default.

Not sure I like the tags thing, I didn't look much into it... but I guess that kinda assumes they always use tags.

Yeah, my default view includes only people, and I have a filter for communities, some of which are not work-safe, like [livejournal.com profile] photographie. I find it easier to keep tabs on things.
