McCain, R-Ariz., a maverick who unsuccessfully fought Bush for the GOP presidential nomination last year, criticized Republicans for intolerance of internal disagreement while treating Jeffords too harshly.

``Tolerance of dissent is the hallmark of a mature party, and it is well past time for the Republican Party to grow up,'' he said in a written statement.

I read not too long ago that McCain might switch his party to Democrat. I'll have to research that before I can verify it though. Maybe later.

If McCain had won the primary I would have voted for a republican presidential candidate for the first time in my life. I still wish that I had gotten that opportunity. I like him so much better than any of the other choices we had.

Had he won the primary, his election to president would have been decisive. (But I still wouldn't have voted for him.)
