Here is the hike up Angel's Landing. Unlike my other pictures so far, this one is every bit as scary and steep as the photos make it out to be.

After climbing Walter's Wiggles up out of Refrigerator Canyon, the trail comes up to a flat area, with a couple of outhouses and a few trees. There are people resting there, either before or after their climb, or while waiting for others to return. Then you head out over the rocks.

One tricky part is when you meet people coming the other way. Someone has to find a place to step off the trail, out of the way. There isn't always a place.

See the posts and chains? These are not railings to stand behind, they are handholds. They're on the uphill side of the trail, and you keep a hand on them as you walk. When there are chains.

So in the picture, you're walking to the right of the chain. Yes, that's what I said.

After a short trip around the first promontory, you come to a flat area where you get your first good view of Angel's Landing.

It can be intimidating.

Some of the pictures make me laugh out loud. It's just insane.

Yes, it's really that steep. Yes, that's the road below.

The one and only warning sign I saw on the trek. "Warning, dangerous edge. Area closed. 1,200 foot drop to the canyon floor."

This is looking back at Scout Lookout. You can click on it for a big view. In the very middle of the picture, there is a sunny hill. Just behind it and the trees is Scout Lookout, which is the flat area I mentioned, that's at the top of the switchbacks. You can see the two outhouses. The West Rim trail heads up the hill to the right. To the left is Refrigerator Canyon. So you come around that sunny promontory, and you end up on the flat area (it's bigger than it looks) with the spindly tree, where you get a good view of the mountain you're going to climb. Then you head down the hill, and up to where I'm standing.

Next up will be the view from the top.

Ok. You got me here. I'd be waiting by the outhouses for everybody else to return.
How long did that last part take to climb?

I don't think I'd be able to get back down if I went to the top!
:P

The photos are impressive and I'm glad I can do this vicariously.

I don't remember how long it took. An hour for the trip out from the rest area?

It didn't seem like going down was worse than going up, on this part. It was climbing, either way.

That hike is definitely not for the faint of heart. Thanks for sharing as I don't think I would ever have seen the views since I wouldn't have hiked it. :)

I actually screamed TWICE while looking at these. At the 8th one, which looked to me like that man was about to fall; and the one where you can see your legs (I think it's the sense of scale).

When you wrote about the trail with the chain, I was picturing something like Angel's Landing (except thinner). Looking at the last set of photos, I was thinking, "where's the chain?"

He's firmly gripping a post. And the camera's wrist strap is around his wrist. :-)

I can see now that he's taking a photo. Didn't see that when I originally screamed.

Holy crap... I assume you had to sign a disclaimer before the climb. I never used to be afraid of heights, but I've developed a healthy respect for gravity... Nice pics, as always.

There is a recent National Geographic with a lot of perilous free-climbing photos. Those guys are insane. What if you drop your rosin bag?

There was a sign or two, that warned of precarious cliff edges. That's about it. It has been suggested that they post the names of the people who have died on this mountain.

Would I join you on this hike?

No!

But I liked looking at the pictures with my butt firmly planted in this chair :)

I'm not afraid of heights, but I am afraid of falling if there's no barrier between me and the bottom of the Earth. I just don't trust myself not to accidentally catapult to my death.

:D
I was thinking of your "I do all my own stunts" icon :)

That's an appropriate one for this subject. Is that a shredded backpack instead of flames?
I think that's my soul escaping fast...
