I didn't catch this when I read the newspaper article at home, but it mentions the Onion article:

The phenomenon of makeshift memorials has grown dramatically in recent years, filling medians and curbsides with tributes and memorabilia. Roadside shrines are such a visible part of the American landscape that they have become a field of academic study and even parody, by the likes of the satirical newspaper The Onion, which described the memorials as "hackneyed."

The author must have been highly amused that an article on the subject that he was working on came out in The Onion.
