Today, I went to a trade show in Chicago. I rode the train down, like many other Milwaukeeans going to that show. Shared a cab with a couple of women from a local company who were exhibiting there. The show wasn't very exciting, or very big, but I did make one cool find. I had time to kill between the show and my return trip, so I walked in the Loop a bit. Didn't have a camera, dammit. I still sat in the train station for an hour. Then there was a propane leak somewhere near the Illinois border, so we had to wait until it was contained. We sat for and hour and forty-five minutes. One regular rider said this happened a few years ago. They sat for three hours before being returned to Chicago. I was trying to come up with contingencies. Ones that involved only having enough charge left in my phone to make one call.

On saturday, we went to Wausau for a once-a-year get-together with friends. It took us two hours, forty-five minutes to get there. It took an extra hour to get back because we missed a turnoff.

That's a lot of wasted time this week.

Sorry you didn't have your camera and your cell was low.

That reminds me of being stuck navigating around closed-off roads on the day of your open house last year.

I imagine a lot of life is 'wasted' time depending on what you'd rather be doing. I think I try to immerse myself 'in the moment' of those unexpected diversions, and it helps relieve some of the regret. I know I ended up having a memorable time of it even though I wasn't where I thought I'd wanted to be for most of that Chicago-flooded Saturday :)

I was only worried about the phone in case of a worst-case scenario. Fortunately, that didn't come to pass. In addition, I borrowed a charger from the guy across the aisle. :-)

I didn't dwell on the waste of time. Fortunately, I didn't have other plans either time. I'd have been more upset if I was missing something important.

I was in the Loop Friday for a day-long professional meeting. There are a lot of potential photo opps down there...

I drove to a hotel near O'Hare and trained in on the Blue Line. It felt good to commute like a local, reading and sightseeing.

Yeah, there are. Did you see my previous four or five posts from mine and Cyn's visit a week before? :-) I shot about a hundred pics.

Cyn told me that if I had gotten stuck in Chicago, I should go to the airport and take an airport shuttle home. I don't think it would have occurred to me to take a train there.
