There's a new Scotch whisky on the block. More importantly, it's a new distillery on Islay. Kilchoman. The representative is doing a tour to promote it, so my dad invited me along to the Union House. This was also the occasion of tasting his 700th Scotch.
When I got there, he gave me a sip of that 700th malt - a Glenlivet 25 year. It was very good, though I only had a sip, so it was hard to get a feel for it. He had three other new ones. I think he ended up at 702.
The Kilchoman tasting was a disappointment. First, it actually cost money. This guys basically doing advertising for his whisky. Second, it cost $15. All we got was a taste, and he gave his five-minute spiel about the distillery. The whisky itself was okay. It's only a three-year, but it was very good for a 3yr. It shows promise for the future, when they can get up to full production with a ten-year, or so.
My dad got a bunch of his St. Andrew's Society friends to come out, and most of them were in their kilts. Full kilted formal. Think tuxedo. Funny, he was wearing a beret. We were just talking about that the other day. Thanks for voting in the poll, by the way.
So I hung out with dad and his friends for the evening. It was a good time. I ended up trying an Ardbeg Signatory, Caol Isla Duncan Taylor, a Macallan Signatory, Bruichladdich cask strength, Auchroisk bourbon/syrah finish, the aforementioned Glenlivet 25 and Kilchoman 3 yr. Also an Indian single malt cask strength. Some of these were no more than a sip.
They're starting to bug me about joining the Society. I suppose I'll have to, since I hang out with them from time to time. My dad would like me to join, but he doesn't pressure me. Nor does he really explain why I should join, aside from the obvious - Scotch and friends. The other day he invited me to one of their meetings, where they had a rare book collector give a talk. Oh, they actually do have interesting things at their meetings? I wasn't all that interested in joining, since I don't really need any more activities or another circle of friends. But at this point, it seems inevitable. Maybe I'll join after the first of the year. I wonder how long it will be before I get a kilt.

At any rate, to respond to your comment... YES, you know how ... ADAMANT Scotts Irish folks can be when dealing with patterns of kilts!
