In order to free up some space on the hard drive, I hooked up my backup harddrive, and started transferring files. It told me I had to wait like three hours or some crap like that, so I went to the basement to do some cleaning. After an hour, I came back upstairs to see what was up, and it had stopped at 100 minutes left. The disk was full. Pretty dumb, I guess, not to check if there was enough space.

So I transferred some files manually, and freed up another ten gig. Maybe I'll try again when I go to bed. I also need to defrag. That'll probably take all night too.

I'm supposed to hook up the time machine to my mac but I know it'll take 14 hours or somesuch thing.

I fear backup and yet I feel convinced that I must have it.

Is that a special Mac sort of thing?

I think backups are important, but I don't do them often enough.

My backup drive is 300 gb. I thought it was more than big enough, but now I realize there needs to be space for two complete copies each of my and Cyn's computers. So four times the size of one computer. Assuming I don't want to delete the previous backup until I've copied it again. Or maybe I'm too paranoid?

I think I may buy another. In fact, yes, I need to. I just moved files onto the backup drive, that I deleted from this computer. They MUST stay on it, and I don't want to have to worry about accidentally deleting them.

I've still got my old computer in the closet. I could try to get it running again. I was thinking I'd use it as a music server. I wonder if it's got 50.5 GB of space on it for tunes.

Good idea on the copied backups. And on different ones for different computers. We don't really have any power trouble, like you do, so I don't think I have to worry about the battery backup for the time being. I only backup a couple times a year, a couple hours at a time. But it's good thought to keep in mind anyway.

It didn't occur to me, but our company, and many others, use tape backup.

Thanks a lot!

Weird. When I posted this, 500 gb was running $65, and a terabyte was $100. Now, I got 500 gb on sale for $74, and 1 tb is $115. I wonder what's going on. The post Halloween shopping rush?

I was saying that prices went up about fifteen percent in the last 3 or 4 weeks. But I need to learn to shop online, like you get all those steals. Oh well, at least Best Buy has a good return policy.
