A few weeks ago, the wind took our patio umbrella and threw it on the roof and then the ground. It broke a stay. I spent $8 and fixed it, but last weekend, as I was putting it up, another broke. It must have been cracked from the accident.

Today, I went out to put it up, and noticed a lot of wasps in and around it. As I started to mess with the folds of fabric, I noticed a dark object in the cloth. It was a bat! I really need to put up a bat house.

So I put the umbrella up, most of the way. The bat woke up, stretched, crawled around for a bit and then flew away. I don't see a wasp nest, but there sure are a lot of them crawling around in there. The string used to raise it all the way, is jammed alongside the pulley, so it won't go up all the way. I tried messing with it, but gave up, being made nervous by the wasps. I really don't want to look like I'm messing with their house.

I wish he ate wasps. But a mosquito eater is a good thing too. :)

I have never seen a furry bat before.

*grin* They are all furry... winged mice. Only the wings are "leather".

I know they're all furry, but that one is really furry.

Cold Wisconsin? Sorry if I offended.

So cute! Oh god how I love bats!

Yes, put up a bat house, and take oodles of pictures!

Bats are AWESOME... but be careful. They do carry rabies, and there is a disease in the northeast called "white nose syndrome" where they get some kind of fungus on their noses... and it is highly bat contagious.

They think two species of bats may become extinct because of that fungus.

Still... GREAT pic and find!

Great pic. Love the little hand clutching the fabric.

I expected it to fly as soon as I put the umbrella up, otherwise I would have had my camera ready to take another pic when it was up in the sunlight.

Now that would have scared me if I would have opened up the umbrella...yikes!

Wow! Well I have to say that we have not had that kind of excitement with our wayward umbrellas!

We were all talking about bats last night! How ironic.

They are really useful, but do beware of getting too close.

We were both careful to keep our distance.

Have you heard Lynda and Jean's bat stories? Hilarious!!!

That was one of them... Jean's recent real encounter was HILARIOUS too.

I heard Lynda's! LOL

You need to hear Jean tell about her encounter some time. It's so funny, how she tells it!

I feel the need to huddle in a corner, altenately whimpering and crying. THAT is how afraid I am of bats!!! I know they're useful and all that. I'm not afraid of rabies. I'm afraid of being TOUCHED BY A BAT!

I can see that they look a bit creepy, but fortunately for you, they don't touch people.

Any idea why you got that phobia?
