The Democrats introduced a bill to provide permanent health care funding for responders to the 9/11 attacks. After all these years, many of them still suffer from respiratory ailments. The aim was to pay for this by closing a loophole that prevents offshore corporations from paying tax on income earned in the US.

Republicans voted it down on grounds that it was being pad for by a tax increase.

Interesting question. The Democrats figured this was a shoo-in, so they opted for the rule that requires a two-thirds majority to pass. The tradeoff for this option is that once written, the bill cannot be amended. So the Republicans could not throw in some sort of amendment that makes the Dems look like asses for voting in favor. Looks like they narrowly missed the two-thirds majority.

It really is. They often abandon logic and rational thought to do the most screwed-up shit, which they then parade as fiscal responsibility. It makes no sense whatsoever.

I heard that they supported it, but voted against it, becasue they claimed that the bill had no provision to verify the immigration status of the recipients! They will go to any lenght to make it seem resonable to be f@cking unresonable!!!
