We saw the MSO. Copland's El Salon Mexico was okay. It was based on a Mexican dance hall, and didn't excite me. Marc Neikrug's Clarinet Concerto was composed at the request of MSO principal Todd Levy, and premiered here. Too modern, and not to my tastes. John Adams's Doctor Atomic was fairly new (2007) and I liked it a lot. Not too busy. Musicality mixed with the tonal stuff that characterizes most modern work. It was based on his previous opera about the first test of an atomic bomb. The night ended with Gershwin's An American in Paris. This last one was nice enough, but kinda dull. I could have skipped it.
The evening began with a melancholy piece by the basses. They played for a few short minutes, and then the lights went down. There was a moment of silence, before the lights came back up, and Frank Almond walked on, past an empty stool at the front of the stage. Apparently one of the bassist had died.
