Check out the map. Yellow is where there are more grocery stores than bars.

The town near here is about 10,000 people. There are four grocery stores. There are eight bars. That's down from ten years ago. Of the eight, two are just bars. One is in the bowling alley. The other five are in restaurants. In the neighboring town, there is only once grocery store, but more bars. There is one liquor store in each town, but all the grocery stores sell liquor. And most of the gas stations sell beer.

Date: 2010-03-20 04:53 am (UTC)From:I grew up in Iowa when it was a dry state. Methodist--ostensibly dry church. When I went to school in Evanston, IL I wasn't a drinker and Evanston was dry. My friends often went to Howard St--border between Evanston and Chicago. Anyhow--for one reason or another I didn't drink until I was in my late thirties.
Nevertheless, when we came to WI I was amazed at the number of bars in tiny little towns. A different culture.

Seriously, the maps of Georgia and Arkansas are interesting.
Georgia - top to bottom: the red dots are:
Dalton/Chatannooga
Atlanta
Ft. Benning to the left, and Statesboro to the right (no that isn't Savannah.. Statesboro is where GA Southern is)
And that last dot surrounds Seminole lake, there aren't any big towns there.
Arkansas was REALLY INTERESTING. There are only 4 wet counties in the entire state, and only one has more bars. That is Jonesboro- a big surprise. The other dot on the eastern border is West Memphis/Memphis. THAT one is not a surprise.
I could probably name all the towns in red in Alaska too.. but I have to get to work.
