The Barrio was once the Jewish Quarter. The city has been a city since Roman times, so there has always been a settlement here, but many of these buildings have been around for almost 400 years.

The bar where Don Juan was set.

A particularly narrow alley.

A car had just driven down this alley. I didn't see it, but I think a waitress had to move the signs for it.

Just beautiful - the colors, the forms, the sunlight. I'm so glad you had locals show you around!

It's a different kind of old, though. Here, old buildings are old because they were ususally *original*. Meaning, built by the pioneers. They are records of the first settlers. Over there, you need to dig for that sort of old. Like the Roman ruins we saw. These buildings were not the first dwellings ever built on the sites. They're just old. Really old.

The 6th picture from the bottom is a beautiful take. Excellent! It's the essence of the traditional Seville house: oversized door, tiles, wrought iron...

The 7th. 8th, 9th and 10th are no longer the Barrio de Santa Cruz but shopping streets around the Cathedral.

I wonder what Manolo was saying in that last picture that I'm concentrating so hard.
:D

I just numbered the pictures. Number 8 (6th from bottom), wasn't that a convent or hostel or something? If it's the one I'm thinking of, you had a story about it.

I think you mean pics 9, 10, 11 and 12. 11 and 12 are the street that lead to the gate of the Cathedral, and where we got the t-shirt. Is 10 from that same area?

You look tired. :-)

9 is Santa Maria la Blanca Street where the little Baroque church of the same name is located.
10 is a street that curves away from the Cathedral also called Argote de Molina. It's the street that comes just before 11 and 12 (where we got the t-shirt). The gift shop street (11 and 12) is called Hernando Colón (after Christopher Columbus'/Cristóbal Colón's son).

I don't remember feeling too tired that night. That was Monday night and we were just about to go to the flamenco show.
:)

I'm drawing a blank on which house No. 8 is. Huh. I don't think it's a convent.

Number 8... You told us what the place was, when we looked in. It seemed to be some kind of business there now, and you talked like we could almost go in. I think the door faces south, and opens onto an open area.

The firsteight pictures, and the last, are from monday night. The others are from friday.

I must not have been paying attention to myself the night of the unidentified door. Was that right in the Barrio?

Yeah. That's okay. Not a big deal.

Yes. We saw garage doors in many alleys, that didn't look wide enough for cars,

nice. did you get the impression that there were a lot of tourists there?

Date: 2009-10-28 05:38 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Yes. There seemed to be a lot of locals in the Barrio, but most of them were just on their way home. Most of the people seemed to be turistos. We were there on two nights. There were people out on Monday, but friday was very busy.

Wonderful photos Kevin. I somehow love the ideas of small alleys and then big open plazas.

Great pics. What is hanging from the ceiling in the bar(?) in pic number 6? They look like legs of meat..

They're hams. Every bar, restaurant and store I went into had them hanging.
