At the end of the first day, I was hoping to get everything done but the shingles themselves. At the end of last night, I had given up on getting the gutters on. I *almost* got to today's goal of putting the tar paper on.

I started with finishing the two higher panels of plywood. That took a lot longer than I expected. I'm still not sure why, but the time might simply have been sucked up by climbing up and down the ladder. Oh, and recutting one cut. What a pain. Then I did the tear off, of the rest. That was the only really strenuous work I did. Then I started cutting out the plywood on the north side. It went fairly smoothly, like I expected, but I was still behind schedule. Partway through that, Joe called and offered to help. Saved! While I continued with the plywood, he started on the fascia boards.

He did okay with them. He had some trouble with nailing, that he worked through. And he cut a couple of boards too short, that I going to have to caulk in. But it's good enough for who it's for. The important thing is that it's done.

We got done with all the wood work right at the point where it got too dark to work. I got the work lights, and we started to put up the tar paper, when it started to sprinkle. We got the lowest roll stapled down, but once it was wet, there was no way to climb up it to do the next layer. Once we made the decision to give up, it started raining. If it had started ten minutes sooner, we wouldn't have wasted our time with it. I might have to tear it off, since it's wet underneath.

So there it is. What's next? I have to caulk and paint. Tar paper, drip edge. Shingles, of course. Gutters and downspouts (rain barrel). Get a dumpster and load it up. Tomorrow night, if it's dry, Joe's coming back, and we'll put up the tar paper. And I'll paint, if I still have time. It's pretty dark by 7:00, now. I need to get it painted before the drip edges go on, and that's the next step. Maybe tuesday I'll buy shingles. I think I'll take thursday off to work on it. It looks like next weekend will rain.

My first impulse was to nail full sheets down over the existing stuff. that has the benefit of not having to tear off the old stuff. But it had the disadvantage of needing someone's truck, and their help hoisting them up there. Not to mention the expense. And when it comes down to it, I'm not sure how much less cutting and fitting there would have been. :-)

But generally, yeah, I prefer rebuilding from scratch to repairing what's there.

The kicker is that I want to tear this shed down and build a new one, sometime in the next five to ten years. I really didn't want to spend the time fixing it, but it was rotting away.

You and I agree on this point completely.

At least it will be water-tight and useful.
