Milwaukee was the center of all Icelandic immigration to the U.S. Some of the first Icelanders arrived in the 1870s and while some stayed in the city, others relocated from Milwaukee to Washington Island in Door County, the oldest Icelandic settlement in the U.S. By 1924, 10 percent of the nation's Icelanders lived in northernmost Door County.
