I found this on the National Park Service website:
Please have any Fed Ex, UPS packages sent to the above address. Please continue to use alternate carriers, as all mail delivered to us via United States Postal Service is irradiated and subsequently damaged.

WHAT?! This is the gov't man - don't they trust accepted venues of sending things?

More to the point, that other gov't doesn't trust the people who send stuff. But what is irradiation supposed to fix?

Isn't irradiation supposed to be a good thing (getting rid of e-coli, and such)? I'm not crazy about it, but they tell me it's supposed to be good. But apparently, one of our gov't agencies doesn't think so.

I haven't heard that irradiation damages things. Maybe the FedEx people are too cavalier about the NPS things that they handle. I can understand sicne I work, sort of, with them: you've got bones, and carved ax handles, and some such that can be messed with if you're not careful. I have just never heard that they're against them overall.

I'd think that irradiation wouldn't damage mail. They say, mail "is irradiated and subsequently damaged." Does that imply that it's the irradiation that does it? OR is it just poorly written? But it does say that "all mail" delivered by the USPS is damaged.

That's just weird. Maybe they mean x-rayed?

Very odd.

Whatever they're doing, it sounds like a problem.

Weird. I wonder what they're expecting will be hurt by irradiation?

Anthrax? More importantly, how are they damaging all the mail?

Off topic:

IIRC you like rollercoasters - if so, you may enjoy number 24 here: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/04/human_landscapes_from_above.html

Yeah, that looks like fun! Great pictures, all. Thanks!

I guess the NPS wants their Anthrax spores intact when they arrive.

I've never heard of a division of the US Government boycotting US mail before...

I've never heard of anyone saying the USPS destroyed all their mail.
