The other day, on the way down to a friend's house, I stopped off to take a picture of a state historic site, to add to Wikipedia. I looked the place up online, and found out some info about it, and decided to write a whole article on the subject.

American System-Built Homes

That's really interesting Kevin! I did not realize that Wright had designed (sort of) pre-fab homes!

He really did think that affordable housing was important. The Archives have over 900 drawings for this project, which is more than for any other project. It's too bad it never took off.

Agreed, though it certainly took off with other companies who didn't do as nice a job.

Sweet. Thanks for doing that. I've been in 2 of them on Burnham St. - one is a 2 story (that's been converted from 2 townhouses to 1 - the building on the left in your Wiki photo), and the other one is the bungalow (before any work was done on it). Both were cool - but the bungalow still had a lot of its original feeling to it. It was v. small but felt bigger, b/c you walk in and the ceiling goes up by the chimney. I could imagine living in it (which doesn't always happen for Wright buildings).

Cool. And thanks, I was wondering which duplex had been converted. They said one was, but didn't say which.

They're giving tours of the bungalow during the restoration.

I remember seeing that Wynant House fire in the news a few years ago. It's a shame.

I really like FLW's work.

Your article is very interesting to read :-D

PS I tried using the talk feature of wikipedia to tell you of a bad link. Did I do it right?

Date: 2009-05-02 04:04 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Yes. Except that newer discussions go at the bottom of the page. I moved it down there, because I'm anal like that. Speaking of being anal, thank for correcting the typo. :-)

And for starting new discussions on talk pages, on your menu bar, in the "This page" section, there's a link for "New section". It's convenient. I only just discovered it a couple of weeks ago. :-D

That other user, Waltloc, asked me to take the picture, since he's an FLLW fan. After I wrote the article, he added some info, and most of the external links. He changed around the Burnham section, and added the Other Homes section.

Here's what it looked like when I was done with it. Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=American_System-Built_Homes&oldid=286380866)
