Tuesday morning, Serendipity drove us up into the Sierra foothills, to see Rivendweller. Margaret and Ray have a beautiful home in a beautiful valley. They practically carved a lot into the side of a wooded cliff. They have a very steep driveway (yes, San Francisco, I'm talking to you!), and a steeper hillside below the house, and a still-steeper hill above it.

It was great to finally meet Margaret and Ray. They're both so nice. We enjoyed the conversations (and the meals ;-).

Shortly after we arrived, the four of us minus Ray climbed down to the river. I climbed up and down the river for quite a while, while the ladies sat and talked. By the time I joined them, they were ready to go back up to the house. Later, we sat by a fire and watched the stars. We talked politics, of course, and cats. In the morning, Ray and Margaret cooked us a delicious breakfast, but the deer were hesitant to join us. Shortly thereafter, I climbed the hillside to check out a 1930s Chevy. Cyn and I took one last walk down by the river, and then we had to hit the road.

This is not the steep part of the driveway.

Daisy with Ray the Man

I forgot to tell Ray I discovered why it crashed. Someone put a rock on the accelerator pedal.

where's the steep part of the driveway?

When you walk away from the house, it's fairly flat. Then you go below that car, and it starts to go uphill. That's where this pic was taken, at the top of the path to the river. Then it curves uphill to the right around that rock. Then it curves to the left, and that's where the steep part begins. That's where your little car chugged its way to the top of the driveway.

LOL! I know *where* it is, I meant where is a pic of it?

Sorry, you only get one question per night.

Hey, no fair! :P

I tried, but none of the pictures really looked like anything.

Next time we'll have to get one of my car hanging precariously at the top.

I find that crashed car seriously eerie. Like Cyn, I want to know the story behind it (although I can imagine). It's like a monument or something. The boulders in the river are fantastic, aren't they?

How do they get up the steep driveway in the winter when it's icy and/or snowing? Can they park at the top? (of course that would mean sliding down).
:P

I know! We have always wondered about that darned car.

The river valley was formed from a glacier thousands of years ago. The boulders are called "glacial moraine."

"glacial moraine."

Is that when those deep grooves that look like tubes were carved in them? I wondered if the water ever got up over the tops of them when I first saw the photos in Cynn's journal.

You have a beautiful spot of property.

It's stunningly beautiful, Margaret.

So...how DO you get up the driveway in winter? Or don't you?

(She answered just below this comment)

Do they get inclement weather up there like snow? How do they drive that steep driveway or are they lucky and can stay home until the weather passes?

It snows a little bit every Winter. We've only been stuck a couple of times when the driveway was iced up really bad. But we put salt on it and got out after a short time. Once the driveway had two feet of snow, but Ray plowed it with the tractor, and we got out just fine after a while. We are at about 2,500' elevation, and in the Sierra foothills, that is not too high. Just right, in fact! :-)

We love it up here!

You have a very beautiful home and I love your cats!!!

Nice photos, Kevin!

You saw a lizard - I don't believe it. I thought the cats had taken care of all the lizards around the house. Those poor things don't have a chance. I see it's tail is shortened already :-)

We enjoyed your visit so much. You and Cindy are really nice, too, and we'd love to have you come back to visit us again any time you want.

Good job on finding the rock!

I would SO be tempted to right the car husk and turn it into a piece of sculpture.. by planting stuff around it.

That would be cool, but the hill is a lot steeper than it looks. And the trees have sorta locked it in.

Good thing I guess that it is locked in.. it would still be falling if not. *grin*

Okay. This is my fantasy about the car.
It was used in the comission of a crime and needed to be gotten rid of. Hopefully, nobody had been inside it, to be gotten rid of too.

I like all of the photos, but the last one is my favorite of this group!
