At some point in time, the river was up at what is now the treetops, since it wasn't a valley at all.

The river gets quite higher than that during the winter. We were there during the dry summer when the river was very low. Pay no attention to that smart-alecky brother-in-law of yours! *L*

In the first photo, the rock in the foreground almost looks like it had been machined that way.
It's amazing what water can do.
