Well there is a guy in a Cardinal (bird) costume that runs around the field when they play Purdue.

Maybe becasue a Cardinal is cardinal-colored? LOL What a silly thing! I can imagine a big tree running around on the field.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_Tree

Over the next nine years, Stanford's students and administrators debated what mascot and team name should replace the Indian. A student poll taken during this period ranked possible mascot names in the following order: 1. The Robber Barons (in a nod to Leland Stanford, the University's founder); 2. The Thunder Chickens; 3. The Cardinal; 4. The Huns; and, far behind, 5. The Griffins. Finally, in 1981, University President Donald Kennedy declared (unsurprisingly, given the other options available amongst the top-polling names) that the team name would officially remain "The Cardinal."

When I read about Thunder Chickens earlier this morning I was quite amused.

The funniest thing to me about that piece is that Purdue's mascot is NOT Pete. It's the Boilermaker Special. Most people who are not really into the Purdue trivia don't know that, and really it's not all that trivial.

Pete is a mascot of sorts I guess as a member of the cheerleading team... and he is ugly! But at least he doesn't wear cheese on his head. *hehehe*

So Pete is just a costume, but the mascot is the train?

Yes sir!
