In a nearby town, there was a couple who had some cats. Two years ago, the woman moved out of their house. A few months ago the guy moved out. He lived nearby, and went back to the house to "take care of" the cats. Apparently this meant dropping off food every few days for a couple of months.
The cats were discovered by authorities on February 22nd. Our twice-weekly newspaper has a "cat count" that runs on the front page. Today's paper lists:
The cost to the humane society for their care is $30,000. This is for spaying, neutering, vaccinations, treatment, microchips, food, litter.
It's sad that people think they're caring for pets when they leave them in an environment like this. Apparently, they drove the guy out of his own home. The couple started with five cats, when they moved in. Those cats would have had fine, happy lives if they had been fixed.
