I took this from Adbusters magazine.

"In the days when our grandparents died at home we know what death looked like. Now granddad is whisked away the moment his breathing slows. You never have to see how the story ends (and so, in some ways, it never ends).

When we butchered animals with our own hands, we understood the exchange of life lor life, and tried to reduce the suffering (if only to ease our own conscience). But modern agribusiness has taken all that mess off our hands. Now we can keep the show - sows that aren't allowed to stand, chickens bred to grow so fast they verge on structural collapse, the final elimination of every trait that is not convenient or profitable - safely out of sight.

When pollution poured from the smokestack of the plant on the edge of town, we knew the tradeoffs "progress" demanded. Now organized crime trucks off CFC's across the borders, and the seeds of massive genetic polllution are sown in labs in anonymous buildings in tree-lined neighborhoods.

Sinister space is the darkness that defines the glight. Once sinister space is out of view, that's when real evil marshals its troop. When there is no one and nothing but the earth itself to bear withness."

I have always felt it is wrong to shield ourselves from evil. We can't hide from it. We must acknowledge its presence. If we pretend it doesn't exist, it only grows.

bummer...

Bioflesh

The more I hear and think about the mass production and distruction ("processing") of bio engineered flesh for human consumption, the more it makes me want to become a vegitarian. I imagine it would take a hundred years or more for us to become a vegitarian society. Its ingrained in our culture - the fast food chains, the deli's and meat counters. I predict that bio-engineered vegitables and grains will eventually replace the comsumption of animal flesh. I rarely eat red meats anymore, as I find I have adverse reactions to all the hormones and steriods they pump in the animals to cause hyper growth and weight gain. Chicken and fish are my prefered sources of protein for the time being, but perhaps I'll learn new ways. I'm just too lazy and culinarily handicapped to go buy all these veggies and soy products and try to turn it in to something edible and enjoyable. Perhaps somebody has a "Vegitarian Handbook for Dummies" publication they can recommend.

I classify myself an omnivore and truely enjoy the taste of a good piece of red meat now and then. I have found a great source of beef that is hormone free, oregon country natural beef. They sell it in one of the natural food stores here in town. Not only does it taste great, my it agrees with my stomach much better than normal supermarket beef. I'm sure there are other co-ops that sell a similar product in your part of the country. Another point of concern that i have is the marketing of farmed fish. Some farmed fish is fed animal by-products as a protien source. Because of this, I stay clear of most farmed fish. Farmed salmon might taste good, however, it lacks the omega-3 oils that is in wild salmon. It is often just called "atlantic salmon" in the stores with no reference to being farmed. I don't believe there to be any sizable wild atlantic salmon fishery, it's my understanding that most atlantic salmon stocks were decimated over a hundred years ago.

A friend of mine doesn't eat meat because it makes her sick - except for the "organically grown" stuff.
