Another fatal accident on the freeway near here. I figured that was the case, since I heard a helicopter hovering. Devonne called to alert me of it. These happen way too frequently. There was a string of fatal cross-over accidents - six in less than two years, so they finally put up a barrier fence. Based on the pictures on the news, I'd say this was another one. I wonder how the car got through the barrier.

Northbound traffic is diverted off the freeway, and southbound traffic has slowed to a crawl. Cyn will have a long ride home. Not as long as the people in the accident, though.

Edit: Wow, the accident happened shortly after 2:30. I didn't hear the chopper until after 3:00. The news footage from that time showed firefighters holding up a tarp to block the view from gawkers across the road. And also a flight-for-life helicopter sitting idle on the highway. The helicopters departed about 3:45 p.m. carrying at least one of the injured. That's a long time to be trapped in a car with critical injuries. More footage from sometime after 4:00 showed them still working behind the tarps. I hope that at this time they were only investigating, and not still trying to extricate injured people.

With the thousands of people who go through there every day, I never assume that I know any of the victims when I hear of an accident. But they mentioned "a silver car," so now my mind started going through all the people I know with silver cars.

And I still hear a chopper. I wonder what they're doing. It's dark out.

Does she have a cell phone so she can let you know she's okay?

I called her to let her know about the accident.

Oh dear! Do you know for sure that Cyn is okay?

Yeah. She was planning on being far from here until well after the time of the accident. But I've spoken to her since.

From what I heard, they had to wait for a long time to be able to get people out of the silver car. The front end was smashed to the back seats. It was a bad one, that's for sure.

On channel 4 yesterday, they said an eyewitness called in to say that they were passed by a silver car going at a high speed. Moments later, it went off the road, crossed the median and flew into the air, like a movie stunt. When I heard that, and since there were so many victims reported, my first thought was teenagers. Sure enough - four of them in that car, two of them killed.

It says the vehicle went under the barrier cables. I wonder how that happened.

Under the barrier cables? I'd think that's impossible.

So would I. But the cables are flexible. And maybe once the nose of the car dug into the ground and got under the lower cable, it yanked the nearby posts out of the ground and gave them more room to go under.

They say that quite a few cars have hit that fence. Even if it didn't stop this one, it certainly prevented other horrible accidents.
