I stayed home today to do some yard work. I had to rake leaves. It's a bit breezy to burn them, so I'll have to do that another day. Fortunately, I can do that in the dark. I got the garden cleaned up, since that's where I burn them. I didn't get as much done as I'd like. I did go to the post office to mail some things. Now I've got to get some stew going.

I love the smell of burning leaves. Most of those on our lot are blowing sideways onto the neighbor's lawn. The upstairs tenant (Peter) rakes what needs to be.

My two maple trees have black spot, so I'd like to burn them to control the spread of the fungus. Another part of the lawn has leaves from my neighbor's, which are fine, so I just mowed them in place. I burn them in the garden, so the ash and charcoal goes into the soil.

Besides, the year before last, I didn't burn the leaves. They got raked and left on the garden all winter, spring and summer. Over time, they compressed to about a four-inch layer on the whole thing.

Yeah, burning stuff as a default isn't good. Unfortunately, being out here in the country, I'm the only one around who has a neighbor behind, so I don't have any brushy, woodsy land behind me, to dump leaves, branches, grass clippings, or the like (and being in the country, we have no collection facility for yard waste, like they do in town). I've got a smallish compost bin, but that's no good for the amount of leaves I've got, or even grass, if I wanted to collect it.
