Styx's debut album, Styx, is not a good one. Not unlistenably bad, just amusingly bad.

Can we not say that about the entire discography of the group?

Yes, we can not say that about the entire discography of the group. :-p

Most of their discography is like that. I haven't heard a Styx record in ages, but if I recall correctly, _Equinox_ was their best effort. After than, Dennis DeYoung's schmaltzy-ness and pompousness took over the band.

Yeah, but this album highlights an era when bands were signed who only had potential. To say it politely.

DeYoung's schmaltzy-ness and pompousness was always there. It wasn't until right at the end (Kilroy was Here) that he really took over with it. After Equinox, Tommy Shaw joined the band, he smoothed over the rough edges, so that one still had the old feel to it.

i agree. i saw them in concert in 77, on the grand illusion tour (their best album, imo). they were great! especially after they played "light up" and everyone did. at the time, tommy shaw had just joined the band, and there were a number of crowd pleasing guitar duels between him and De Young.

I'd like to hear one of their shows from that time. It would be interesting to hear what early songs they were still playing. That album is in my alarm clock this week. Actualy, that was Tommy's second album and third tour with the band. He said for his first tour with them, they drove a station wagon. I wonder what size van they were up to for Grand Illusion. What kind of venue were they in at the time?

it was in burlington vt, probably a 5000 seat venue.

I saw them in 1990, in a smaller place than that.

I have never liked Styx. Or Boston.

That's too bad. They have some good stuff.

It's the sound. It's like fingernails on a black board. But that's just me.

I knew a guy who had the problem with Elton John. I don't understand that, because all of those bands have such a smooth (dull, even) sound.

Oh-oh, now I've got "Lady" stuck in my head! *Laugh*

Hey, that's better than some of their songs, like... nevermind.
