In 1999, Dream Theater released a concept album called Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. Two years later, after a tour, they released a live album called Live Scenes from New York. Take a look at the album cover.

Notice the Twin Towers? Care to guess what the date was when that album was released? If you figure it out, it will be obvious why the album was recalled and the cover changed.

Here's the new cover:

It's the band's logo over the same background.

Yes, the record was originally released on September 11th, 2001.

I didn't realize they were still recording at that time (or still?). Metropolis is by far my favorite of their releases.. but I haven't listened to New York.

Yep, they're still around. Just had a record out in June.

Interesting that they did a song called "Metropolis pt. 1." They just called it part one as a joke, But the fans wanted more, so they strted work on a new song, and it ended up being a whole album. I think they wanted it to be a double, though.

i seem to remember that there was a rap album that came out a couple of years before 9-11 which showed the towers on fire in almost the same places the planes hit.

it was actually three months before.

Interesting.

The album, which was originally scheduled to be released in early September 2001, is best known for its original cover art, which depicted Boots Riley and Pam the Funkstress appearing to detonate the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. What appears to be a "detonating device" is in actuality a digital chromatic tuner, which is used in music to tune instruments or vocals during warm ups.

The art was created in June 2001. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, the album's release was delayed until November 2001 to allow new cover art to be used.

creepy, isn't it?

Yeah. The Dream Theater one is only of note because of the date it was released, but The Coup's really looked just like what really happened. I'd be surprised if they weren't investigated by the government (just because that's how they work).

I just wanted to openly admit that I love me some DT.

James LaBrie's solo stuff is excellent, too.

Jimmy Eat World released an album in 2001 called Bleed American, and after 9/11 they re-released it as a self-titled record. I'm glad that I've got a copy of the CD with the original title, since it serves as a reminder, long after guys in suits decided that we were too sensitive to deal with vague references to airplanes or suffering of any kind. I suppose I can appreciate where they were coming from, but I'm not sure I agree with all the changes that were made.

The band Bush released an album shortly after the attack, and the originally-planned cover (http://www.bigbtv.com/Images/Amazon/BushGoldenState.jpg) was a silhouette of an airplane. The final version (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/21M94PVRRWL._AA240_.jpg) just has the band's name and album title on the cover, and the lead single Speed Kills had its title changed to The People That We Love, even though Speed Kills would have been a much more appropriate title.

Here's a great wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_audiovisual_entertainment_affected_by_the_September_11,_2001_attacks) with a list of affected entertainment.

I can see changing it in some cases - like the two we talk about above. But removing any references to death or anything negative? It sounds like Onoz, we must counteract all the negativity in the world! Actually, that's the best-case scenario, since the alternative, this might remind someone of 9-11 is really stupid.

In either case, the change must have the agreement of the artist.
