I'm not an alarmist. Seldom have I bothered to get myself upset about things around here. I was unhappy about 6A's decision about nipples in userpics, but I didn't complain much. Same about adding ads.
The latest? They will and have deleted journals because a word appears in its interests list that is an illegal thing. But what pisses me off is that they do it without warning. Even without warning that they will be doing this in general, let alone to your journal.
Yes, I know this is not a free country (this is a corporate website). Whether we paid money to be here or not, our journals exist at their whims. But what's going on here? Hysteria about criminal acts. They won't give you a warning that they're shutting you down. Why not? They won't reinstate your journal so you can remove the offending words. Why not? So a rape survivor's support community? Gone (anyone witness or refute this? edit: word is that it never happened to a community). Why? Can anyone provide me the moral or logical ground this decision was based on?
They give you some bullshit line about Our legal counsel advises us that it would increase LiveJournal's liability if we were to allow your journal to be unsuspended for you to delete the illegal interests from your profile. This is because if someone were to remove the illegal interests from his or her profile, but was in fact using LiveJournal to coordinate, solicit, or participate in illegal activity, LiveJournal would most likely be considered to have foreknowledge of that activity and thus become liable. And how about this: Journals, on the other hand, may express or imply interest in illegal activity or express or imply a desire to meet and/or interact with others with similar interests, but only if the journal clearly (1) is in opposition to or condemnation of the illegal activity, (2) does not encourage the illegal activity and (3) is not used in furtherance of any illegal activity. This applies to journals. This does not apply to the collection of words on your profile page known as the interests lists. If a bad word is on the list, they can delete you, regardless of whether you've stated you're opposed to it. Why? If you say you're opposed to it, how can you be promoting it?
The abuse team (or whichever body) has no leeway in following the rules, probably because they've demonstrated they can't be trusted. So the people in charge have to set up rules in such a way that leaves no room for leeway. I've been dealing with that sort of crap for years, and it pisses me off every time.

Date: 2007-05-31 04:01 pm (UTC)From:Delana and I are reviewing the ToS for our webhost, and might be slowly moving there. It would be nice to have some real freedom again. Because, honestly, there's nothing that we post or do that would currently run us afoul of the ToS, but there's something inherently unpleasant in the thought that it's out there, just waiting, and that some random wingnut can point to something and shreik and the next thing you know everything's getting shut down again.
Because Modern Customer Service simply decides, if given enough infractions, that rules must be put in place to disallow thing X.
I've been away too long
