Here's a promotional article about Appleton Wisconsin.

There's More To Appleton Than Our Acclaimed Escorts

So I wondered which parts of that article were true. Wikipedia has no information on the escort services, but it does mention that Appleton also had the first telephone in Wisconsin, the first incandescent light in any city beyond the East Coast, the first hydroelectric power and the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States.

Interestingly, the city was named after a person. Samuel Appleton donated $10,000 to the new Lawrence University. Apparently, the first guy who gave them $10,000 already had a town named after him (in Kansas), so this guy got the honor.

In other Wisconsin news, they've come out with a new dairy drink: Lots of Pulp Milk.

I should send this to the 2--TWO--guys I've worked with who grew up in Appleton. They'd be able to tell me where the best escort establishments are.

I hate to burst their bubble, but the first enclosed mall was in Minneapolis.

I've done a little research. The Valley Fair Mall was built two years before the Southdale Center in Edina. Maybe it wasn't enclosed at the time? The most specific info I can find is where someone says, the mall was one of the first in Wisconsin to be enclosed, and is arguably the first enclosed mall in the world with its own climate controls.

Southdale makes a big damned deal about it; if you research that particular mall I'm sure there is loads of info.

Yeah, I'm sure it's well documented. Not so much info on the Appleton mall.

Oh my god is that funny. I liked the line:
It may not spring to mind right away, like Las Vegas or Sheboygan.

Samuel Appleton donated $10,000 for the new college library. The community that sprung up around Lawrence University, initially called Grand Chute (there is still a community of Grand Chute next to Appleton), was given the name of Appleton. It has long been claimed that the new name was in appreciation for Samuel Appleton's generosity, and he certainly believed that this was the case. However, according to historical information from the Appleton Library, Reeder Smith was the first to call the area Appleton, not to honor of Samuel Appleton, but the wife of Mr. Lawrence, Sarah Elizabeth Appleton. She was the daughter of William Appleton, a merchant in Boston and a member of Congress. Samuel Appleton was a cousin of William.
