Cyn and I are going to Hawaii. (I'm sure half my friends list knows that already, but for the rest of you...) We've got our tickets, and should be booking a cottage on Kauai in a day or two. tonight, we picked up a couple of guidebooks. There sure are a lot of things to do there, for such a small island. I could spend a couple of weeks hiking. But I want to see the canyon, take a helicopter ride, a boat ride, see some beaches, do some surfing (no, not really). Did I ever mention I can't swim? That cuts down on the options, a bit. I hope I don't over schedule the week.

We leave on a friday morning. Milwaukee to St. Louis to LA to Honolulu. We arrive there a bit late, so we'll stay the night in Waikiki, and head over to Kauai after lunch. We only have five and a half days there. :-( On the last day, our flight leaves Honolulu at 7:00 pm, so we'll spend the afternoon in the area again. I hope to see the Arizona memorial. It's an overnight flight to Dallas, and then we get back in Milwaukee at 10:30 in the morning. That gives us the rest of the day and sunday to recover.

Oh SUPER! You are going to love it there. I'm sure that by now you know that there were a TON of movies made on the island. But... don't worry about attacking dinosaurs! *L*

Oh, I'll just hide out in the lab.

Just so you know...
Sean does not swim either. However, he did snorkel. You use those floaty things to help you.

I want to go in a Helicopter when/if we go back. I'm sure that the canyon is so spectacular seen that way.

Snorkeling is a truly wonderful experience. I did it once only, in Hawaii.

The first time I snorkelled, I put my face into the water and saw such a profusion of fish that I started saying "Oh, wow!" but finished with a mouthful of sea water.

I expect that you could snorkel even if you couldn't swim: lying face down on the water's surface requires no skill, and you just wave your arms and legs a bit to move around. Best try it in shallow water, though.

I think Kauai is especially beautiful. So many waterfalls! Also, it is not as crowded as the other islands. You will have a wonderful time.

You can snorkle without knowing how to swim: just get one of those floaty things.

It wasn't very hard to decide which island to go to.

You'll love Kauai! The crater is gorgeous!

Do you mean the canyon?

The only thing I'm disappointed about is missing the volcanoes.

Canyon .. yeah that's it .. I had a few glasses of this really tasty wine last night. A chardonnay semillon and it must have made me a little loopy!

LOVE the name and the pretty bottle..

Did you say something about volcanoes?

OOH, you might find the helicopter ride to be pricey, but it's really really worth the money. We did that and I'll never regret it. The same for snorkeling. I got goggles with an optical prescription a little less than my glasses and I could see EVERYTHING - all the beautiful fish swimming to get some of the breadcrumbs that others had tossed from the boat that we snorkeled from, off the coast of Molokini. But I do recommend snorkeling from land rather than a boat, especially if you can't swim and will rely on those floating devices. Both the helicopter ride and snorkeling are truly wonderful experiences.

They say you shouldn't really pass up a helicopter ride on Kauai. You guys have talked me ino it. I'll have to try snorkeling if there's time.

Yay!

ohhhh... more information for you

You will be there when the Humpback Whales are off of Mau'i. If there is any way that you can get over to see them... DO IT. That's one of my favorite memories from Robert and I going the first time... back when Mau'i was not so darned busy. We sat outside of our hotel eating breakfast and watched a family of the whales swim by... talk about a fabulous experience!

You won't be able to snorkle off of Kaua'i (rip tides) but there is a small island not far away that is supposed to be fabulous. I think someone commenting ahead of me mentioned the name of the island.

oh and... there is a VERY OLD crater on Kaua'i but it's in a VERY rainy area.

WHEN we go back I think I want to stay on Hawai'i itself. I have heard that it is quite wonderful too.

The big island would be my second choice, I think. Volcanoes are cool.

I think perhaps you have a bit of misinformation... volcanoes are HOT! ;-)

Date: 2007-01-14 09:14 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
I just may have to try snorkeling... if there's time. The guidebooks talk about a few beaches that have good snorkeling.

Yeah, whale watching. I should have had that in my post up above. Definitely. There are a few boat trips that advertise whale watching cruises. Did your boat trip do much actual sailing, or mostly motoring?

Date: 2007-01-15 01:34 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com
Mostly sailing... but we did run into a head wind and lots of waves so there was some motoring too. You really HAVE to motor some because it is a fairly long trip. We went on one of the Captain Jack boats.
It was a beautiful!

We went out on a catamaran both times.. whale watching in Mau'i and then the dinner cruise off of Kaua'i. The second boat was the largest I think...

Date: 2007-01-15 02:33 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] serendipity.livejournal.com
Yes! In the early to mid-80's. It was truly wonderful. Some day I hope to snorkle again!

I don't think we'll be leaving the concourse, but thanks. :-)

TAKE PICTURES!!

I have never been off the big island, and didn't particularly care for it, but then I don't like masses of people.

The Arizona memorial is a must in my opinion. There is never any noise.. no matter how many people. It just blows your mind.
