how to draw comics

I just got a book about how to draw comics. It's called Drawing Comics is Easy! (Except When It's Hard). It's "by Alexa Kitchen age 7." She's pretty good. There are step-by-step instructions about expressions, posing, perspective, backgrounds, color, layout, shading. She doesn't talk about depth and perspective, but she exhibits it. Apparently, she doesn't realize she's doing it, or that not everybody does. (I certainly wasn't drawing with any depth at that age.)

There books are published by Denis Kitchen Publishing. Denis is, of course, her father. He's spent a few decades in the comics puslishing business. In the introduction to one of her books, he says

I was in the middle of a conversation with Will Eisner in our home last year when Alexa interrupted and handed him some of her new pages. Will was at first mildly annoyed but kindly looked at the material. He smiled and said, "Did your father help you with these?" She responded, "No!" with clear indignation. Will was quite skeptical till I assured him I had not touched her pages. (In fact, I'm not even allowed to look at her pages until they are finished.) At that point the inventor of the graphic novel interrupted our previous conversation for something he found far more interesting: her.

Alexa is incredibly gifted! WOW ... her drawings are kid-like but you're right about them being full of depth and perspective .. what a wonderful talent to possess at such a young age.. I bet she goes a long way and has a very lucrative career. How fabulous for her!
