what it all comes down to is trust. you have to trust the system and the people working in it. it used to be that so many citizens participated at every level of the process that it was hard to get away with fraud. it's a lot harder to trust a computer.

These are all valid concerns. I'm still going to vote by absentee ballot though because as you said I really don't see a substatial difference between voting at the polls or voting at home. I still dont completely trust the process.

Where I live (and I think throughout California), absentee voters can hand-deliver their own ballots to any convenient polling place the day of the election. I'm a permanent absentee voter, and I do this - mostly because I don't have time to do the research and make up my mind by the deadline to mail the ballot in, but increasingly because I trust hand delivery more than the mail.
