The spring on the garage door broke last night. Not real happy about that, but at least Cyn wasn't going to work today, so I didn't have to get up an hour early to open the door for her, and she could wait around for the door guy.

Of course, the door guy says the garage door and opener are in bad shape and should be replaced. That's true, but I was hoping to get a little more life out of them. And I was hoping not to replace the opener, since it's old and doesn't have the safety features. This means I can walk under the closing door and not have to step over an infrared beam. He says it's going to go in the next six months. I'm thinking that since it's lasted thirty years already, what are the chances of that? But who knows?

Anyway, I figured since the guy was here already, we might as well have him do all the work now. *sigh* Besides, I'd hate to give him the chance to say "I told you so." But since the new door is lighter than the old one, we should be able to sqeeze a little bit more life out of the old opener, we decided to stick with the old one for now. He said we can buy an opener from them later, and install it ourselves.

This reminds me, I want a new garage door and opener.
We have the original aluminum manual door. It's a lovely shade of dog shit brown. I have to tie an ice chest to the door so the wind won't blow it open...hahahahahaha!

I look out at Sal's new building I call garage and he calls a shop. (lol) It has brand spanking new roll-up industrial doors.

You have to tie the door shut? Jeeze!

Sorta, I open it slightly and tie it to the ice chest when I want to get a breeze in to hide the "something dyeing" smell in my garage. The wind blows it open so I have to anchor it down with the nearest, heavy item with a handle to hook to the cantilever hanging from the door...HAHAHAHA

can you say GHETTO!!

I loves my powered openers. But the moron who installed both doors wasn't carefull and didn't space them from the frames right, so one rubs and sticks. The other's tracks weren't properly alligned, and the door hung-up on them.

I fixed the alignment, but will have to get screws and shims to fix the other door.

Other than that... i loves my doors. One has chain drive, the other has belt. The belt drive is nice and quiet... :)

OOooo...take pictures.

I actually would be happy to have room to park in MY garage...lol
(did you notice the heat is trying to come back...bastads!!!)

yah. I noticed the heat. And the plume of smoke haze again tonight. I'm hoping it goes away soon.

It doesn't smell smokey yet...

Ours has a worm drive. You wouldn't expect worms to be so noisy.

hmm.. yah.. them little guys don't even have much for mouths... ;-)

is it the motor, or the worm/gear that makes the noise?

I think it's the gear. And probably the door too. Maybe *mostly* the door.

Half door, half gear. Now, with a new door, it's half quieter.

Ooh. No windows in my garage, but still...

windows in the door are only slightly cooler than insulating panels. :)

I've never known anyone who has a garage with an automatic door. They either open sideways like, er, doors, or you lift them with muscle power and counterweights.

Conversely, not many people keep their cars in there. It's too tempting to fill it with junk.

My mom used to have a garage door opener - me. I never really minded, but then I never had to get back into the car to pull it into the garage. My first garage (pictured) didn't have room for a car. This place came with one. *shrug*

This place has a shed for junk, so we've got both cars in the garage.

The door isn't doing very well. I was hoping to get a little more life out of it, but what the hell. It sags a bit, it's not insulated, it's not looking so hot, and it's very heavy.
