If Brooklyn were not a borough of New York City, but were a separate city, New York would still be the nation's largest city (by population), and Brooklyn would be the fourth largest.

I love Chicago too, but the shopping at Christmas-time can get a tad hairy! Those lines to eat under the tree at (what used to be) Marshall Fields are impossible! And FORGET talking to Santa! *L*

i moved here from san diego and one of my first thoughts was, "why are the sidewalks so skinny!" there are definitely enough people here, especially downtown, for wider sidewalks. and during the holiday shopping, that would come in handy ;)

It sure would, but that would narrow the streets I guess.

What if you remove all of the other boroughs except for Manhattan?

Date: 2006-07-22 04:41 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Population of the boroughs:
Brooklyn: 2.5M
Manahattan: 1.6M
Queens: 2.25M
Staten Island: .45M
The Bronx: 1.35M

New York City as a whole: 8.1 million

i think brooklyn is only as big as it is now because everyone and their mother had to move out of manhattan! only the rich remain for the mostpart.

That's a lot of humans!

That always reminds me of the joke about the guy from Alaska who got very tired of the Texan boasting about how big Texas was. "If you don't shut up, we'll split Alaska into two states and make Texas only the third largest state!"

Ha ha, good one.

yep. there's a sign as you come off the brooklyn bridge into brooklyn. mexico city is three times as big as new york, though.

What does the sign say? "Fourth largest city in the United States"?

NYC is not in the top ten largest cities on the planet, but it's third after Mexico City's #2 largest metropolitan areas.

that's exactly what it says.

They called joining NYC as a borough, "the great mistake of 1898."
