I'm having a lot of trouble getting on LiveJournal at work. A couple of weeks ago, they introduced Websense internet filtering, which made it kind of a pain to get through my friends page. I'd have to click a button a couple of times before i could open a new page, like the comment page for an entry. Three of the four days so far this week, I've been unable to load LJ at all. "Page not found."

Then, since I've been so busy at night, by the time I get online, sometime after 10:00, I have to get through about 22 hours of my friends page in less than two hours. Tonight, I got online a little before 10:30, and it's bedtime now. If I can, I'll get online before I go to work, like I did this morning. But that means I have to get up a little early, which means I should go to bed earlier.

And not having LJ at lunch time, means I play solitaire, or something a little less stimulating. But at least it's a shorter lunch than usual. Or I could take a longer lunch than usual, and come home.

I did clean the carpet in the family room, go for a two-mile walk, and clean the basement some. I'm happy about all that, but I'm a little disappointed about having to change my reading habits.

They removed solitaire from the programs at work. As well, they indicated if you had to 'log on' to any external sites that weren't work related, it could mean immediate dismissal.

I don't understand what the big deal is. It's not like you can't take a break anyway. What difference does it make if it's on the internet? It's not difficult to find out if you're abusing your privileges.

I guess they don't want their equipment being used for that stuff. As well, the bank's IP address showing up on various sites could prove embarrassing.

Using it for what stuff? Porn? That's already against the rules. And it's easy to detect. And I don't know how embarrassing it could be, anyway. Are sites going to start advertising that they get users from X business? The site administrators themselves would probably be impressed.

I guess we have all been reduced to wayward children who need to be controlled...

There are so many ways people can screw off on their work time. Why eliminate just this one? And considering how easy it is to see how much time you've spent online, why are they eliminating the easiest one to keep tabs on?

Because it is an easy one for them to completely control. It takes very little effort on their part. Any other controls take their time and energy, or even (heaven forbid!) their money to keep tabs.

I know that the school system simply says that it is their computer system, and their computers. They do have the right to control how they are used, BUT, it's sad that they chose to be so... mean?... about it!

Exactly.

It sounds like this is a good way for IT to perpetuate their jobs. Not that it's a conscious reason....

We are headed more and more toward the concept of "Big Brother"...
