neighbors

I spoke with my neighbor Dorothy, this afternoon. She told me that her husband had died... a month ago. :-(

I like the idea of having neighbors, and being neighborly. Unfortunately, I've only spoken with the guy across the road once, his wife once, the woman behind us a couple of times, her husband not at all, and Dorothy a few times. The neighbors to the east are not friendly. So how do you keep in contact with people? I don't want to go running over there whenever I see them out - which isn't all that often. I hate knocking on people's doors just to say hi. I guess there's too much space in between our houses.

The houses are pretty close in our neighborhood, but the only time we all talk is if we're out doing the yardwork at the same time, which is rarely. I've tried being friendly, but they must not need friends at this point in their lives :-)
