Cyn and I went out to eat for my birthday tonight. We went to my favorite restaurant, Jerry's Old Town, for my favorite ribs. It was a little disapointing. They changed owners in the last year or two, and the food is just a little bit different. The sauce was less tangy and more vinegary. The french onion soup, which used to have a lot of onion and bread in it, with cheese, was mostly cheese.

Cyn gave me three CD's. William Shatner's Has Been. I'd heard the opening track, "Common People," before, and it's pretty good. The rest of the album doesn't quite match it, but is still quite amusing, on various levels. I also got the DVD-Audio versions of Yes's Fragile, and ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. I haven't had a chance to listen to the latter, but Fragile sounds beautiful. For the DVD-audio versions, they've remixed the original records, and put in on a DVD instead of a CD. There is room for so much more data on a DVD, so the sound is much richer. And there is a great deal of definition, since it's in 5.1 Surround. There's also video on the ELP disc. Unfortunately, I don't think I can hear the recordings in their full glory. I've got to check into the technicals.

Happy birthday. Which one is this?

I have the Shatner. It is amusing! "Common People" really hits me.

I've been told that I'm now 39.

Oh yeah, I meant "Common People." (I meant to get the disc and check before I posted - I've only heard it once, so far.)

I heard or read an interview with Ben Folds about that album. Basically he's really proud of it, because it was a chance for Shatner to be confessional in a way he'd never been before, and how after 73 years, he's still got great work to offer.

Musically, the whole thing is pretty solid, thanks to Ben Folds, but if you really listen to the lyrics, it's hard not to feel a connection to some of Shatner's sentiments. I like it a lot.

Happy Birthday! 8~)
Hey, happy birthday, Kevin!

I've heard the Shatner CD. The title track, Has Been, and I Can't Get Behind That (featuring Henry Rollins, if memory serves) are some darn good tunes. Shatner and Ben Folds' version of Common People is better than the original, in my opinion, but I've never been a big Pulp fan.

Many happy returns and all that good stuff!

Thank you!

I didn't know that was a cover. Now I'll have to see if I can find the original.

It's a good song either way - well written. I like Shatner's version better.
