Here's a video account of a guy who was involved in citizen rescue operations. It doesn't say when this was, but I assume it was tuesday or wednesday. The story is that a call went out for anyone with a flat-bottomed boat to go house to house and rescue anyone they could find. At some point, some rescuers were threatened at gunpoint. Whomever it was in charge, decided that the lives of the rescuers were more important than the lives of the victims and called off the effort.

No air drops?

Here's a good one.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson offered Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco help from his state's National Guard last Sunday, the day before Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. Blanco accepted, but paperwork needed to get the troops en route didn't come from Washington until late Thursday.

Refugee camps
This one seems to rely a bit on hearsay, but it was the only mention of the camps that I've come across.

Officials say they do not have the manpower, the resources or enough time to save everyone.

Among the doctors stymied from helping out are 100 surgeons and paramedics in a state-of-the-art mobile hospital, developed with millions of tax dollars for just such emergencies, marooned in rural Mississippi. Story

New Orleans paper rips federal response

"We have been abandoned by our own country," said Aaron Broussard, the president of Jefferson Parish in New Orleans.

He broke down in tears Sunday as he recounted how a colleague's mother drowned awaiting rescue from a nursing home. "Everyday, she called and she said, 'Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?' " Broussard told NBC's "Meet the Press."

"And he said, 'Yeah, Mama, somebody's going to get you. Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody's coming to get you on Friday,' and she drowned Friday night."

Is Bush to Blame for New Orleans Flooding?

Unblievable. I wonder how Karl Rove will spin all of this. Oh, wait. I know. He'll just lie. That's their standard "when all else fails" tactic. But how are they going to Swiftboat all the victims of New Orleans?

I was wondering about Rove. Good thing there's this hurricane to distract the public from his crimes. Oh, nevermind - they had already lost interest.

I just added one more story to the list. Check it out.

I was clicking through things and came across a timeline of recent events on DailyKoS. Somehow, with everything, I had forgotten that LA had declared a state of emergency the day before the hurricane hit. I thought that meant they were prepared to help. I wish they could have just relayed "paperwork" over the radio/via cellphone. Everyone okays it, then they're ready to go. What the hell happened?

HERE is a really good post about Rove's plans to deal with this politically-disasterous event for the president (see, that's how they view it: not a disaster for victims, but for the president).

I wish I wasn't in this motel with really crappy dial up so that I could get these things downloaded before we have to leave on Thursday. *sigh*
