Conservative religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said Wednesday that his remarks about the removal of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez were taken out of context and that he never called for the killing of the Latin American leader.

"I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out.' And 'take him out' can be a number of things, including kidnapping; there are a number of ways to take out a dictator from power besides killing him. I was misinterpreted by the AP [Associated Press], but that happens all the time," Robertson said on "The 700 Club" program.

What he said was:
"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war."

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

EDIT: He has since issued a written apology.

I never understood how these "Right to lifers" think nothing of offing someone they don't agree with...Like abortion clinic employees or the Venezuelan Prez.

By "take him out", what they are really suggesting is that there be dinner, some dancing, and maybe a handshake at first.

"Well, when I said, 'Let's kill the motherfucker good and dead,' what I really meant to say was, 'People, listen to reason, let's be diplomatic, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now, you know?' but the AP took my words out of context."

But certainly not a pre-marital kiss, because that would be immoral.

Hugo Chavez said he doesn't care in the slightest what Pat Robertson said. I wish people wouldn't take these right wingnuts so seriously. After all this is the friggin' genious who claimed that the 9/11 attacks happened becasue God's protection racket was invalidated by abortion and gay marriage. I think the old man has gone senile. It's nice to see the anti-choice, dogmatically irrational Christian Taliban movement shoot itself in the foot. Mwahhahahahahahahah!!!!

A shame he apologized. Why take back what you really feel, even if it isn't popular?

Too many people think of violence as abhorent, and to never be used. That's so damn stupid I can't even begin to form words for how damned much I hope those people die violent deaths, just so I can picture the look on their face.

I think Mr. Robertson is a lunatic equal to Hugo Chavez's disregard for human life, and civil rights. I wouldn't weep if either of them died.

If it had been someone else, it wouldn't have been as strange. But this is a religious guy. Who Would Jesus Assasinate?

When has any religion not been about murder?

Date: 2005-08-25 06:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Maybe that's the point, then. Jesus was very against it, and the Ten Commandments prohibit it, so until these so-called Christians either refuse to support killing, or stopp thinking of themselves as Christians, I'm going to keep bugging them about it.

You must have a lot of spare time then? Seriously, religion, organized religion especially, is as lethal to the world as any disease, as disasterous as any natural event-having killed as many as any war.

Of course I'm biased....:D
