The following data were collected from the last 13 packs of plain m&m's I've eaten.

Average of 56.9 candies per pack. One pack had 59 pieces.

Twice, there was only one of a particular color (once red; once orange). Twice, there were 20 or more of a particular color (once 20, yellow; once 25, blue).

I had four packs in a row with exactly thirteen green m&m's.

The average colors per pack are as follows:

colorall packslast six
red8.26.0
orange8.110.5
yellow10.28.8
green9.912.8
blue11.914.2
brown8.75.3

While keeping track, I have eaten a total of 740 m&m's. The lowest total number of any color was 105 orange candies. (Orange is my least favorite color). The highest number was 154 - blue (my favorite color).

When I have a stressful day at work, I treat myself to some m&m's. I separate out the candies of the least comon color. Then I count them, and eat them a couple at a time. I've been doing this for over three years. Obviously, I don't eat m&m's very often.

Okay, you can have *one*. Wait - let me mark it down first.

Somehow I knew you'd comment on this one.

I know you don't watch t.v., but on the hit sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," Raymond's older brother did stuff like that. He sorted his candy, too.

Just sayin'

M&M compulsion

When I was in college, I had a notebook where I'd take down M&M stats. And I always eat them the same way:

First I sort them into piles by color. Then, barring situations in which there are only four or five of a given color, I eat the more numerous colors until there's the same number of each color. Then I pair them up by complementary colors: blue and orange mixed, and green and red mixed. Then I eat the brown and yellow ones. Then I line up the complementary colors in checkerboard formations. For example:

BOBOB RGRGR
OBOBO GRGRG
BOBOB RGRGR

Where B is blue, O is orange, G is green, and R is red. Then I eat them one at a time from the outside of the checkerboard in. I always save one blue and one orange for last, because blue and orange is my favorite set of complementary colors. Which means that I love Slice cans.

Here's a picture of the slice logo for your amusement: Image

I always divide them up by color. I always leave the green and the red for the last.

One year at work, one of my coworkers would keep track of his M&Ms.
He was trying to see if there was any consistency in the mix. The rest of the technical tax law section got interested and we would eat M&Ms, too, but first we'd bring them to him to analyze. Doug would jot down our statistics and then give us back the M&Ms.

It seems that there was more consistency than you're finding. Also, that was back before there were so many colors. It's a fond memory.

The numbers get more consistent when the sample size is larger. This was only thirteen packs.

What colors were there back then? Was that when there was no red? There used to be light brown.
