Foolishly, I was plugging her monitor into the monitor jack on the back of her computer. Apparently, her son had added a new card that I didn't see, down near the bottom.
I did the exact same thing after we bought a graphics accelerator card. I was plugging the monitor into the monitor jack, and the screen would stay black upon bootup. I finally took it to the store where I bought the monitor and paid the guy $40 to fix it. Half an hour later he came back and said "Works fine for me." So I took it home and (of course) plugged the monitor into the monitor jack. Black screen. Then I noticed that the new graphics card had the same size jack in the back. D'oh!
The weird thing was that I didn't even get the screen configuration stuff when I hit the buttons on teh monitor, so I just assumed something was broken. I guess that requires the computer to be plugged in.
I hope the guy didn't charge you to tell you it was fine. And why did it take him half an hour to discover this?

He had to take twenty-five minutes to pick his nose first. I mean, come on. Who hasn't had one of those boogers that just won't come out?
