If it would cost $39,000 to send someone to college for four years, and we didn't have this war going on, how many people could the federal government have sent to school?
From the site: The College Board report Trends in College Pricing estimated that the cost of attending a four year public college or university in 2002 was $9,963, or $38,652 for four years. To this figure was added 2% to adjust for inflation, or $39,425.
Okay, for a state school where the student is a resident. The more prestigous private schools cost a hellava lot more. Tuition at the University of Chicago in the late 80s was $20,000 per semester! I can't imagine what it costs now.
The site was suggesting that the gov't could issue four year scholarships to thousands of people. I don't think anyone would agree that they should cover that amount. :-)
