My grandma died at 4:00 this morning.

She went into the hospital over a week ago, and then into a nursing home. I guess she had had strokes. This last time in the hospital, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She had been unhappy for a while now. She was having so much trouble getting around, and was scared that she was losing her sight. I think she's been ready to go.

The funeral will be on Thursday.

Of my cousins, one just had a baby so she won't be able to travel to the funeral. It's the birthday of another today, and he's got to work a fourteen hour shift. It sucks having to work at menial tasks with something like that on your mind. My aunt didn't tell the third cousin because his wife is out of town and she didn't want him to break down with no support.

My dad started calling relatives at 6:30 this morning. Most of them were out already.

that's rough. even when they are ready to go themselves, we aren't always ready to let them. it was that way with all of my own grandparents.

If going was what she wanted to do, then that's what I wanted her to do. I just wish I knew for sure that's what she wanted. She talked like she had ne reason to stay around any longer.

That's a major bummer. Sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like she was prepared to move on, though. About your third cousin who can't be told yet. I guess if it were me, I would want to know right away to start planning for the funeral. Now he can be paranoid that they didn't tell him right away.

I agree, Mikhail. Often relatives think they're protecting someone when, in fact, that person may not want to be protected and would prefer to know the truth as soon as everyone else knows it.

Condolences

May she rest in peace.

When my father's grandmother (who was the one who raised him since his mother died when he was a baby) passed away, his family back in Iran decided not to tell him about it, because they were afraid that he would jump on a plane and fly there. This was the late '70s, mind you, so the political climate in Iran wasn't very hospitable to expatriates. He didn't find out for about two years, when a family friend called him to shoot the breeze and mentioned "Oh, by the way, sorry to hear about your grandmother."

My dad hasn't forgiven his family for keeping him in the dark.

Thanks

That's serioulsy wrong. I mean, I guess I can understand why they didn't tell him (though I'm not sure if I'd have done the same), but they should have at least told him just after the funeral. Why on earth would they never have told him?

She was putting it off only for a day. I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation (except that I probably wouldn't have thought about that), so I can't hold it against her. When his grandfather died, he took it very hard. I think his mother wanted to soften teh blow as much as she could.

Oh, Kevin, I'm so sorry. :`(

Your grandmother sounded like a wonderful woman. You're really lucky to have had her in your life for so long!

I'm glad she didn't have to suffer too much with a lengthy, debilitating illness and that she seemed ready to go. Sometimes that's the best for the individual *and* her/his family. Still, now you're left with a hole in your heart where she was. I hope that fond memories of her will help sustain you in your loss.

Love,
R

She was my only grandmother, really, since my mom's parents died when she was young.

My grandparents lived quite a distance away, so I only got to see them a couple of times a year. Sometimes I would stay with them for a week or two in the summers. those are my fondest memories of them.

Oh, Kevin! I'm so sorry! The fact she was ready to go may, or may not, be comfort now but I'm sure it will in future years. My Mom died of congestive heart failure and was more than ready to go.

What a lot of things you're facing this winter! {{{Kevin}}}

Thank you.

I wish I knew what she was thinking, this last week. If she knew this was it, and whether she was accepting, or just resigned.

She gave me quite a few plants, and a few seeds, but only in recent years have I been able to keep them alive. She'd always ask me about the plants, too. I think she remembered all the times I killed them.
