Did you hear about that 13 year old star surfer that was attacked by a shark?

The water was clear with no sign of sharks. She was lying on her board when a shark lunged up and took off her arm, along with a chunk of her board. Then it disappeared.

"Nobody saw it happen. She just yelled, 'A shark bit me!'" said her father, Tom Hamilton.

pretty scary, isn't it? she was a very good surfer, too, and was thinking of going pro.

Sad Story.

Funny how few pictures there are of surfers who are not smiling.

Yeah, she already had sponsors.

Surfing

Surfing is to smiling as dentist appointment is to frowning.

But at least with the dentist thing you frown with glittering white teeth.

If you've wasted two hours watching Blue Crush, the token surfing movie of the 2002 summer movie season, you've seen quite a few frowning/brooding surfers.

Are you not allowed to be a pro surfer if you only have one arm? Can you not surf with only one arm? Why can't she go pro now? What gives?

I think surfing is all about balance.

I'd guess that she could surf again, but not at champion levels.

If you look at it, why not? Living in paradise, getting to have a great deal of fun and spending your out of school time riding the waves?

It's events like this one that really change it up.

Balance is mostly an inner ear thing, isn't it? I know squat about surfing.

For staying upright, yeah, it's the inner ear, but for throwing your weight around to make the board lean and go the right direction, you need your arms.
