This story was from mid-December. I wonder how much of this has gone on since, and we Americans are unaware. Or maybe it's just me. Who has heard of this sort of thing?

I knew...

I was majorly pissed when I found out, too...they kind of snuck it into the news, reeeeal quiet like when we needed the support of the Muslim community.

We're trapped in a nightmare with no way out anymore. I feel so sick all the time now.
I can't keep up with everything our government is doing anymore...the petitions, the letters, trying to save our trees or our reproductive rights or civil rights or trying (ha!) to keep us out of an ill-advised war....

*smashes imaginary guitar*
No future! No future!!!

Heard about it some time ago. The arrests are for people overstaying their visas, and for other incidental issues...

The people HAD done something wrong, and the government HAS been arresting Mexicans for doing the same thing, and the government IS implementing this program for ALL nationalities in time...

But, I have no doubt the timing of this was specific, and also very stupid.

Teachers in colleges have been noticing that their middle eastern students have been dissapearing for months now. I heard about it some time ago.

I think I heard about it when you posted about it back then.

"all male immigrants aged 16 and over from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and Syria"

Just our enemies? And just the males? So far.

If I were being cynical, I'd say to leave them alone, rather than send them home, where they could fight in a war.

Was it you who posted a link to someone who mentioned that, a couple of weeks ago?

I'd like more information. Are they being detained? Deported? Moving to Canada? Staying home? Going home? I agree it is bad, but how bad is it, really?

It wasn't me, but someone on my list did, the one they posted was a letter from a teacher, I think in Chicago. In that one, they assumed that they were moving to Canada, but there were other links that had other stories as well. I can't remember who it was, sorry.

However, the US has traditionally "detained" the members of whatever country we have armed incursions with. Way back when we were in it with Cuba, I lived close to a "refugee" camp where Cubans were kept.. out in the middle of nowhere in Arkansas. That camp has been used multiple times, for different nationalities of people. I am not surprised.

I heard about this when it happened, too. I wonder how much of this is going on and not getting around much?

I heard vague ramnblings about it on NPR, and then, nmore recently, I heard more about it in a speech that Amy Goodman of Pacifica News Service gave. Her speech is also the reason I was compelled to see the film about Kissinger's war crimes.

In all fairness, some of those Arabs and very few of the Iranians were undoubtedly Christian. They were picked by nationality, not religion. Did you know Tauriq Aziz is (or was) a Christian?
