The death toll at that club is up to 96.

It's just horrible. I can't get it out of my mind. They said attendance was over 300 people. Well over a quarter of the people there never made it out.

It's really sad and scary. I've had on CNN for a couple hours while they report on it. I can't imagine what it wsa like to be them in there.

They rolled the footage that a Channel 12 newsman was shooting of the club on CNN. They said he was there doing a story on, of all things, Club Safety.

On the footage, you could see the pyrotechnics go off, the backdrop start to catch fire and really start burning in a matter of only 15 seconds or so. The guy shooting video realized immediately what was happening and quickly moved to the back of the club. You could see the band putting down their instruments and sort of non-chalantly stepping off of the stage. Perhaps a moment later, the whole building was involved, it was just that fast.

The guy who shot the video said some people were delighted when the flames started up. They thought it was a part of the program.

Good God! When I posted there were "only" 39 confirmed dead.

The survival rate of the twin towers was 85% If 85% of the patrons at The Station had survived we would be talking "only" 45 dead... Not good odds for emergency egress from a ONE STOREY building!!!!

I can't either. It's horrifying.
A little over 24 hours later I'm still shaken from it and I'm clear the fuck out here. That kind of swift, emmolating fire, terrifies me, even at great distances.

I watched a little CNN when I got home and was really put out by the sort of witchhunt flavor the coverage was taking. They interviewed some guy from The Stone Pony who said the band didn't have permission to use pyro there either and they did. So now The Stone Pony owners are going to file a lawsuit. Five days later. wtfever.

We talked about it some last night.... A few of my friends do shows in bars from time to time as fund raisers for AIDS related charities. They are usually variety shows. A lot of people come in from a lot of far flung places and coordinate acts at the last minute. Sometimes we don't really know for sure what we are getting.

They've never been asked if there was going to be fire involved. Maybe club organizers just don't think to ask, but on any occasion they could have had a fire-baton twirling majorette at these places and as long as no one got hurt and no one complained the people in charge would never have known the difference.

It's never come up, and obviously it won't now, but it was just a tiny example of how and why no one asks and no one tells.

And yes, I will probably case every club I go into for the rest of my life..."where are the exits, just in case?" I mean, I'm usually hyperaware of that kind of thing anyway, because I honestly am a little paranoid, but I bet I will be much more hyperaware now. And no more second floor clubs for me anymore, thanks.

But at the WTC, they had a good hour before the towers fell. Here, they had, what, three minutes?

Second floor clubs? What about *basement* clubs?

One of the things that makes this so difficult is that fire is such a horrifying way to die.

From the sounds of it, the pyrotechnics were no little sparkler effect. I heard in that other show, the sound guy was really pissed about the intensity of the heat.
