My mother went out to eat with a friend last weekend. The place was kind of expensive, so they brought a coupon. The waitress told them that they weren't accepting the coupon because it was a holiday - Sweetest Day. My mom said, "that's not a holiday!" The waitress replied that it was on the calendar. They left.

Aside from not making it more clear ahead of time that the coupon was not being accepted that day, the waitress should not have blamed my mother for not realizing that it was a holiday. She should have just apologized for it.

What a bunch of bull! Sweetest day is not a major holiday. I would complain to the management and get my meal free at that establishment next time. Unless the coupon stated "Not valid on Sweetest Day" it should have been honored! Not to mention the waitress was rude to your mother.

I would definitely have complained to the manager! What a crock!!

I can certainly see why the coupon was invalid that day, since Sweetest Day is a big day for restaurants, but they definitely need to be more clear ahead of time. At the very least, put a sign on the door. They're probably counting on people staying anyway. It's a good thing that they followed instructions and presented their coupon when they ordered.

What the heck is Sweetest Day?

what bullshit~
i would have spoken to the manager-
"sweetest day" is a corporate "holiday",
it hasn't exactly made it as far as Valentine's Day yet!~
gads, this just makes me mad!

It's very similar to Valentine's day, except... um, I'm not sure how it's different. I'm sure it is. The greeting card industry cooked this one up to sell more cards and gifts.

I don't acknowledge it.

They walked out. Voted with their feet.

The manager could have reiterated the claim. They walked out. Voted with their feet.

i guess it's possible, but i wonder if the waitress was just taking it upon herself to proclaim~ she sounds young and/or inexperienced~
(don't tell james i did "and/or"! he disapproves!) *giggle*

i'd still make my complaint known, even if they didn't agree~

I'm sorry it couldn't have been a matter of importance.

Not to worry - I try not to fill my head with too many important facts. Gotta leave room for the useless trivia.

Sweetest Day?

what the heck kinda holiday is that??

you say it's like valentine's day?........that's not a holiday.....i don't recall any special consideration given for working on valentine's day......it's just another pile of sh*t that the retailer's expect you to spend money on......as far as the sentiments expressed on valentine's day, one should be expressing them EVERY day.....

still, i have 6 calendars in my office.......not ONE says anything about sweetest day last weekend.......however, google lead me here: http://www.holidayorigins.com/html/sweetest_day.html

i'd bet you it isn't on the waitress worker's union calendar either........

Absolutely correct, the waitress should have apologized to your mom regarding the coupon deal.....with that kinda crap, the coupon would float into the trash can and i would elect other places to eat....

Really? It can't be just a midwest thing. I have trouble escaping it if I"m paying attention to the media.

Thanks for the link. I had no idea there was anything further behind it than retailing.
