search help?

I know there are a couple of you out there that are good at searches. The US Patent and Trademark Office site wasn't able to give me any info on patent number 51,098. If I can't find it online, it will have to wait until I can make it down to the Milwukee Public Library. Can anyone help me before then? Mainly, I just need to know the date it was issued.

No work. It goes to the page, and the number is listed, but it doesn't display. The same as when I went there. Can you give me any details? What I've got is a "photo press".

go to the patent office page. do a number search, and then click on images. they don't have patents that old in text format, only as quicktime images. this was an invention that made it easier to stop a streetcar.

That's what I did. The page just shows that little "image goes here" icon. The one of the white rectangle with the little colored shapes inside.

you are on a work computer, right? they probably don't have quicktime installed. i don't know how to save the image or i would email it as a gif or something.

It says I can use any of several programs to access it, several of which I have. Maybe I'll just try it at home.

The date is November 21st 1865. I eventually got the thing that i found to show me stuff. The images are in TIFF format, which is pretty stupid.

See this story where it mentions that the US patent office is being sued to prevent destruction of paper records because their on-line system is so bad.
