So Bush goes up to a fire scarred mountaintop to promote giving more timber to logging companies, and says, "what the critics need to do is come stand where I stand. We are trying to bring a little common sense to forest policy." I assume he meant, by "where I stand" that we should stand in the shoes of the industry friendly president.

He said, we need to understand if you let kindling buid up and there;s a lightning strike, you're going to get fire." Well duh, Mr. President. That's how nature gets rid of the kindling - it burns off. Oops, I see your point, that homes may be threatened by this natural occurrence (okay, I know that your point is really welfare to timber companies, but for the sake of argument...), but YOU CAN'T CUT **ALL** OF THE FORESTS DOWN!!! But I guess you'lldo your part to help prevent forest fires. We can't fault you for wanting to protect our very homes.

What this little press-op amounts to is trying to snow the voters into thinking he's doing a good thing. Because he knows as well as I do that giving more timber away is not going to do anything about the fires, in the grand scheme of things.
